The record
An official file preserves that a report was made and examined. It does not, by itself, establish what was seen.
- US Army Reserve, 316th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) DA Form 2496 Disposition Form - operational hazard / near-midair report, 23 Nov 1973, attested by all four crew (opens in a new tab)
The document is attached to this entry.
What is not settled
A hazard filing, not an investigation; the Army never adjudicated a cause. The 1973 Orionid shower peaked that week and a bright fireball explanation has been argued. The altitude gain depends on a pressure altimeter reading. Blue Book had been closed nearly four years, so no federal analysis followed.
